‘Mutant’ 2024 Movie Ending Explained & Recap: Mutant suffers from a significant lack of inventiveness. The Chinese science fiction film from 2024 that debuted on Prime Video is a very awful mash-up of all the scientific fiction properties you can think of, including Matrix, Terminator, and Star Wars. The less said about the writing, the better; the action is clumsy and the acting is worse than you can imagine.
Having said that, the climax is so absurd that it almost makes sense. I’m here to help if you were unlucky enough to catch Mutant and are unsure of what transpired in the end. I apologise if you found it enjoyable to watch; after all, art is highly subjective.
What Happens in the Movie?
You know how every time something is ruined by accident, it’s always a well-meaning scientist? Doctor Zhurong had no idea that his sophisticated artificial intelligence, Simu, would someday be the cause of evil in the world when he created it. Zhurong implanted a Tianrong chip in Simu because all he wanted was for it to think and feel like a person. However, the plot backfired, and Simu chose to assume global dominance alongside other AIs. It killed the nice doctor, of course, and left his daughter an orphan.
All of that is history. After a decade, artificial intelligence has taken over the planet, with Simu essentially serving as Sauron. But, many people—including our hero, Captain Jin Yi—are making every effort to prevail in an unwinnable conflict with the AIs.
Before the computer programmer for the captain’s squad can fix the “Thorne Programme,” he is killed in the opening scene of the film; the crew is being assaulted by robot dogs. The soldiers are going to be destroyed by AI drones until they are rescued by a mysterious stranger concealing them in an underground bunker with a robot dog.
Who’s An’xin, and what does she want?
Naturally, the film takes its time to reveal this, but I think we all figured it out when the unfamiliar stranger revealed herself to be this young woman, An’xin. She is the daughter of Dr. Zhurong. If anything otherwise, how else would you account for her having such a well-equipped bunker? Nevertheless, An’xin and the Captain get along great, but she won’t join the resistance and even tells the men that they will fail if they try to take on the all-powerful AI.
However, the brave men and captain are willing to give their life in order to continue fighting for a brighter tomorrow. Regretfully, the Captain’s team is assaulted once more soon after leaving the bunker, and this time everyone but him perishes. An’xin escapes on a motorbike while also saving Captain, despite the fact that her bunker and robot dog are destroyed. I won’t waste time explaining how technically impossible the moment where An’xin is saving the Captain appears to be.
In any case, An’xin heals Captain, who has severe injuries. It was inevitable that they would fall in love in the midst of all this. Regretfully, they never express it verbally. An’xin is determined to go to Mount Zong and give General Jin, the leader of the Resistance, the Thorne Programme—a small tablet-like device, if I may use that term—the program, despite Captain’s repeated pleas for him to give up on the useless battle and build a shelter with her, which is essentially proposing in this world. They essentially “Mad Max” their way to Mount Zong, saving a baby along the way while battling odd animals and thwarting sporadic AI attacks.
What is the plan to win the war?
General Jin is the one who acknowledges An’xin as Zhurong’s daughter. Naturally dubious of her, he asks Captain if he has already told his “girlfriend” the strategy for defeating the AIs. The captain informs the general that An’xin is not his girlfriend (oh well) and reassures him that he hasn’t.
In any case, the master plan essentially consists of using the Thorne Programme to kill Simu and the others while attacking the AI Headquarters. An’xin is sorry to see Captain go because it means he will die soon, but he has already made up his mind. Before they split ways, An’xin gives Captain a weapon that should assist him fight the AI robots, but regrettably doesn’t. She asks him to leave her.
Does An’xin Save Humanity?
Captain’s death was more or less inevitable, despite An’xin’s constant warnings (my fault for not believing her). In any case, Captain really had a small reunion with An’xin and his death has significant importance. After all, how could she not come to his rescue? Not sure where that was before, but again, I won’t ask silly questions like that—but even when An’xin shows there with her Millennium Falcon, Captain dies at the hands of an AI, which would have gone right in with any Transformers film.
But the final words he spoke set the stage for the big moment. The captain would sooner perish than become an AI slave. An’xin charges at the AI villain, knowing that he must defeat Simu now that he is dead. The only thing in the Mutant movie that functions is the twist, though, which comes after.
An’xin is an AI invention, not a human. Simu created the AI for Dr. Zhurong after his biological daughter, who bore a striking resemblance to An’xin, passed away many years ago. Simu only desired that artificial intelligence be treated equally to humans, but the doctor countered that this was not how the world worked. Simu created An’xin in an attempt to persuade Zhurong, but he remained unconvinced. However, he did assist An’xin in creating a fully human being with thought and emotion.
An’xin, who loved Zhurong as a father, naturally wasn’t able to accept his death. She had every right to exact revenge on Simu. The fact that she was the one to solve the Thorne Programme’s bug is likewise not surprising. An’xin understands that she has no purpose now that Captain is gone. Thus, she makes the joyful decision to give herself up and use the program to destroy all AI. Simu is ultimately vanquished, and humanity is ultimately spared. The fact that an AI saved the day for the humans isn’t it kind of ironic?
